Bowl in Akron. The Summit Bowling Association will begin its sixth season of league play on Friday, September 6 at 9:30 p.m. This year's location will be at Northgate Lanes in the State Road Shopping Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

Bowling is an enjoyable alternative to the "bar scene," and gives one a genuine opportunity to meet many good people. The most important aspect of this league is that you don't have to be a "pro" to become involved. Bowling averages range from 75 to more than 160. Become a part of a new alternative! For more information, call 699 6814 or 794 8872 in Akron.

Gay and lesbian Republicans will be meeting to organize a new political organization called the Western Reserve Log Cabin Foundation. This group is for politically active people who support change for general acceptance of people with different sexual orientation, yet maintain the principles of conservative America. Mon-

eming councils of Tampa and surrounding Hillsborough County approved amendments to their respective human rights ordinances that will add "sexual orientation" to the list of protected characteristics. The

day, Sept. 30, at the Center, 1418 West 29th Street, 7:30p.m. 781-6736.

You thought we had everything? How about this: A 24-hour Madonna news hotline, 1-900-98-VOGUE. The Madonna phone magazine was developed in response to the thousands of Madonna fans that crave up-to-date Madonna news. The service is $2.00 for the first minute, and $1.00 for each additional minute. The operators, 94 Kings Productions of Detroit, are not endorsed by Madonna or any related entities.▼

amendments exempt employers that are religious organizations. Supporters attributed the success of this effort to the change in personnel on the City Council and County Commission, the visibility that the local gay and lesbian community has achieved in the past two years, and the way that the community rallied in support of these measures.

Mostly favorable media attention, including exposure of the opponents' misinformation campaign, also helped.

Tampa's mayor Sandy Freedman had endorsed the measure, and signed it into law the day of its adoption, her office reported.

The American Family Association has promised a campaign to place the amendment's repeal on the ballot, an effort supporters hope will not succeed. They point to a telephone poll which showed that 58 percent of county voters supported dis-

crimination protection for gays and lesbi-

ans.

Another beautiful highway

After being sued by the ACLU, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has reversed its decision to prohibit the Southern Appalachian Lesbian and Gay Alliance from participating in a highway beautification program.

In the state's Adopt-A-Highway program, community groups keep designated portions of selected highways clean of trash. Signs are posted at each end of the two-mile stretch, noting the group's name. The state has abandoned its previous refusal, and will install signs with SALGA's name-including the words lesbian and gay on the portion of Interstate 40 that the group will maintain. The lawsuit will be withdrawn.
